About Dr. Alice duncan

Human judgement. Mental health. AI. Systems thinking. Storytelling.

We are living in an age of extraordinary technological advancement — yet many of the deepest human challenges beneath it remain remarkably unchanged.

I am Dr Alice Duncan, a medical doctor, retired consultant psychiatrist, former property investor and entrepreneur, and Founder of The Brand A-Eye. My work sits at the intersection of mental health, artificial intelligence, human decision-making, systems thinking, storytelling, reflective leadership, and real-world business experience.

Over more than two decades, my work in property investment and business development extended my understanding of risk, housing, finance, resilience, and decision-making beyond medicine. This included work connected to housing vulnerable adults, informed by my experience in psychiatry, prison services, family court work, and the wider care system.

For more than three decades, my professional life has been grounded in complex clinical and institutional environments where decisions carry real consequences. I have worked across general adult psychiatry, forensic psychiatry, secure psychiatric services, perinatal mental health, family court work, and specialist medical board assessment.

That experience has shaped one central conviction:

The human must remain in the loop.

In healthcare, leadership, family systems, institutions, and now artificial intelligence, the greatest risk is not simply technical failure. It is the loss of context, judgement, empathy, and human meaning.

The Brand A-Eye was created as a space to explore that territory.

It brings together my clinical background, transcultural lived experience, systems perspective, entrepreneurial learning, and growing work in AI and healthcare. It is where I reflect on how people think, lead, adapt, and make decisions under pressure — especially in a world increasingly influenced by technology.

A Career Built Around Human Complexity

My background as a consultant psychiatrist has placed me in some of the most challenging areas of mental health practice.

I have worked with serious mental disorder, clinical risk, public safety considerations, trauma, family breakdown, safeguarding, and professional fitness for work. My work as an expert in the Family Court in England and Wales involved independent psychiatric assessment in situations where mental health, parenting capacity, risk, and child welfare intersected.

I have also contributed psychiatric expertise as a specialist medical board member, assessing professionals in the police and fire services where trauma-related mental health conditions intersected with occupational demands.

These roles required more than diagnostic knowledge. They required careful judgement, ethical clarity, cultural awareness, and the ability to understand people within wider systems.

That is the lens I now bring to conversations about AI.

Why AI Needs the Human in the Loop

Artificial intelligence is changing how we work, think, communicate, diagnose, organise, and make decisions.
But AI cannot replace the human responsibility to understand context.

It can process information.
It can identify patterns.
It can support decision-making.
It can augment professional practice.

But it does not carry human experience, moral responsibility, cultural memory, emotional intelligence, or clinical accountability.

That is why my work focuses on AI as an augmenting tool — not a substitute for thinking.

The future of healthcare, leadership, and human systems will not be shaped by technology alone. It will be shaped by the quality of the human judgement we keep inside the system.

A Transcultural Perspective

A defining feature of my perspective is my transcultural lived experience.

From early life in the Caribbean — Jamaica and The Bahamas — to professional life within UK institutions, I have lived and worked across different cultures, systems, and expectations. This has shaped how I understand mental health, identity, leadership, power, belonging, and the interaction between people and institutions.

It has also deepened my interest in transcultural AI ethics: how emerging technologies may reflect, distort, amplify, or overlook human difference.

In an age of global digital systems, this matters.

Healthcare, mental health, and AI must not be designed only around the loudest voices, the most visible populations, or the easiest data sets. Human context is not a side issue. It is central.

Systems, Risk, Reinvention, and Real Life

Alongside medicine, my experience in property investment and business development gave me a direct education in financial systems, risk, resilience, adaptation, and decision-making under pressure.

That journey was not one of uninterrupted success — and that is precisely why it became valuable.

It taught me that systems behave differently in theory than they do in real life. It also reinforced a lesson familiar from medicine: risk is rarely simple, failure is often instructive, and good judgement develops through experience, reflection, and adaptation.

This wider entrepreneurial journey now informs how I think about leadership, complexity, reinvention, and the human role in changing systems.

What The Brand A-Eye Explores

Today, my work focuses on:

  • Human decision-making in complex systems
  • AI and healthcare
  • Mental health beyond diagnosis and labels
  • Leadership under sustained pressure
  • Human in the Loop thinking
  • Transcultural AI ethics
  • Storytelling as a way of teaching and understanding
  • Culture, power, and voice within institutions
  • The quieter influences on health: upbringing, environment, food, family, memory, and lived wisdom

The Brand A-Eye is for people who value depth over noise.

It is for professionals, leaders, thinkers, educators, clinicians, and curious humans navigating complexity in a rapidly changing world.

Here, I offer perspective grounded in experience, shaped across systems, and refined over time.

Because in the age of AI, the human story still matters.
